Show Summary
Loosely based on the case of convicted 19th Century murderer, Ruth Snyder, this play was written by journalist and playwright, Sophie Treadwell and was first performed in 1928.
Lost in a series of episodic nightmares, a young woman, Helen, goes through life on auto-pilot as she checks off boxes and does only what is expected of her, never having the chance to figure out what truly makes her happy. Based in surrealism, we stand witness to the internal conflict and suffocation Helen experiences as she marries and starts a family with a man she does not love for financial security. Years of feeling trapped in this life she does not want to live leads Helen to commit the ultimate crime of murdering her husband, resulting in her being put to death by electric chair.
